The Patriotic Front regime is planning to stop International media from covering the forthcoming treason trial of UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema Police sources have disclosed.
Meanwhile, a team of four people has been constituted to authorise all news stories by government owned and state controlled media during the trial. The team will also select journalists that will be allowed to enter the trial court and pass the list of selected journalists to the police committee.
Police sources have told the Zambian Watchdog that dictatori Edgar Lungu and his aides at state house are not happy with the way International media has been reporting on the treason case and want to regulate who covers the trial which begins on August 14 2017. ” You know it is clear that HH’s case has backfired on government. There is no treason that was committed. If there was treason committed then definately not in Mongu. There are some senior people in government who say the arrest of HH has just raised his political profile and they want to mitigate this,” the source said.
The source also revealed that a team headed by Deputy Inspector General of Police in-charge of Operations Malcom Mulenga has been constituted to that effect. ” We have been instructed to work with the Zambia News and Information Services (Zanis) to make sure we restrict who should cover the trial and who should not.
It will be the first time it will be happening in Zambia where the Police chooses who should enter a courtroom. I have been a senior officer for more than 30 years and I have never come across such nonsense,” the source said. On the other committee constituted to edit stories, the source said the committee to be headed by Information Ministry Permanent Secretary Geodfrey Malama will be the final authority to authorise publication and broadcasting of stories by state owned and controlled media.
Other members of the committee are PF Director of Media Sunday Chanda, former convict and owner of private owned but state controlled Daily Nation and Energy Regulations Board Vice Chairperson also member of the PF media committee Ngande Mwananjiti.
